Skinny vs. Fat: The War Rages On

What was initially a "who wore it best" poll, turns into a "skinny vs. fat" war...

I think both of them (Kim Kardashian and Victoria Beckham) look great in this Alexander McQueen ensemble, in their own element. {Note: The dress was originally worn by Beckham in March of 2009, then Kardashian followed in the optical illusion ensemble for a promotional campaign for her reality show on E!} In my honest opinion, both have chosen to wear the dress in a way that highlights their best assets according to their own body and personal sense of style!

However, when I read the comments on the post, it was a total "skinny vs. fat" war of words among a wide array of women! The same amount of hatred can be found on DailyMail's online article. I believe, it may have been started by the words chosen by the writer of the post or maybe it's just the harsh view of women that is ingrained within us by the media and society.

The only comment I found not repulsive and extremely honest is Sarrs':
“Unbelievable. These posts are just plain mean.
I understand curvier women supporting Kim [Kardashian], makes sense more like them and thinner women supporting Victoria [Beckham] for the same reasons. Seriously, there’s no need to hate on anybody.

Most of us women cannot help our body types, save dieting or plastic surgery. Women with large breasts, butts, and hips are the “classic woman”–-well, what about those that are naturally thin? Just because they happen to have been born with small breasts, hips and butts, they are less womanly? Seriously ladies. Stop being so mean to one another. I know these posts are anonymous, but would any of you make these comments to someone’s face? I think we all have a really hard time trying to love what we were born with. Media mixes messages for us on a daily basis. Thin women are made to feel less feminine because they lack “womanly curves”–-I guarantee–-they already feel bad about this. Curvy women are made to feel like fashion is only for the thin–-runway models are notorious waifs–-so they too feel the need to starve themselves to look more like models (less than 5% of our population). Lets try loving one each other instead of bashing the opposite of whatever body type that we have to make ourselves feel better.

Women are women because they have breasts (small or large) and a vagina to make babies. Ladies in a world where we are pitted against one another, lets not buy into this crap and support each other.
In regards to the fashion of the dress I think each wore it for their own reasons: Victoria so it would give an illusion of more curves (what so many are meanly criticizing her for not having–for gods sake–the dress is an attempt to look more like someone like Kim); Kim is proud of her curves, I can’t speak to whether or not they’re all real, but she wore the dress to show off what she considers her best assets.

So what?!? Do any of you feel better about yourself after reading all this? Do you feel vindicated by those who have bashed on your opposite body type? Do you feel validated by the men and women who have praised your body type?

This world is hard enough. We don’t need to add to the madness by berating anyone.”

Kit-Kat's comment is assuring as well: "In my opinion these two girls are on the extreme sides of curvy and thin and I think the dress is meant for a girl who’s in the middle. {Say, Carol Vorderman?} And stop judging girls ASAP because I see people insulting VB for being to thin and calling KK beautiful, and I see people calling KK fat and VB beautiful. Kim [Kardashian] doesn’t need to lose [weight] and Victoria [Beckham] doesn’t need to gain [weight]. They’re both beautiful but in different ways, why can’t you people see that? Judging people is what makes them change their bodies for the worse, so stop it already!"

I wonder what people would say if the images were of two larger women or two slimmer women:

For those who don't know me, I’m a skinny or thin-framed individual and have been all my life. Last year I had made friends with 2 larger or plus-size women and they had their own body issues, just as anyone does. However, they were threatened by me because of my skinny or super-thin frame that they desperately wanted. One of them I considered a good friend and the other I considered an acquaintance.

One day, I decided we all should hang out and we all went to a restaurant, then a lounge, followed by a karoke bar.

Later that night they both were trash-talking about me behind my back, picked me up at the karaoke bar (without my permission) and threw me around like a doll. At first I tried laughing it off, but later as they were forcefully pushing me and pulling me, I felt highly threatened. Luckily, my other half was with me so he had to intervene in order to get me out of there. It was an ultimate form of disrespect and I discontinued my friendship with both those individuals immediately. I have been teased about my body, just as anyone else, and I don't value people who bash one another–-I like focusing my energies on the positives! I think ignorance only breeds more hatred and misunderstanding!

And I know that men feel the same way in regards to their own personal bodies, so women aren't alone in this! Men are berated by the media, same as women. We're all human; I think we should all accept and love ourselves, followed by loving one another. When we start doing this, even in the smallest way, then we can all start the process towards peace (within ourselves and within this world).

Jen Kao Thrills & Wows

Jen Kao was born in Los Angeles, raised in Kansas, and moved to New York City in 1999 to study Studio Art at NYU. Later building on her passion for fine art and with a desire to explore three-dimensional design, Kao recognized her growing interest in textile construction and subsequently obtained a graduate degree in fashion design from Parsons.

Recently Kao debuted her first resort collection and I must say "wow"! Kao's designs are usually experimental and radiant; her resort collection was described as "easy dramatic" since it pulled together easy-to-wear pieces with dramatic prints and colors.

My favorites from Kao's Resort 2012 Collection include:

I loved the bright colors and, most of all, the beautiful shades of blue [my favorite color]. Kao never fails to amaze me... as her runway shows always feature cutting-edge prints, nail art, jewelry, and hair styles.

So I totally just bought the last Motel "Rockies" print dress in XS on Nasty Gal. FYI: Nasty Gal is a San Francisco based online shopping website that targets vintage enthusiasts as well as individuals that want something unique from a newly-found designer. I'm always hesitate to purchase online, but I just couldn't pass up the fun-printed dress and since there was only 1 more dress (in XS) in stock I took it as a sign!

Motel has amazing, unique merchandise! They sell a few merchandise on Nasty Gal, which is how I heard about them. Also, they have a store in Bristol (United Kingdom) and they sell online via the official website: http://www.motelrocks.com/.

Most famous for it's figure-fixing, quirky dresses--Motel is a brand that likes to call itself "the wild child of British style," with their "eclectic mix of punk, retro, fun-filled 'killer style' clothing."

Lily Allen, Little Boots, The Ting Tings, Alesha Dixon, and Marina and the Diamonds are just a few public figures or "celebrities" (within the music industry) that have been seen wearing the UK-based brand. Motel has also rocked several magazine publications, including the May 2011 issue of (American) Marie Claire.

Royal Wedding fever spread throughout the world as Kate Middleton, the newly named Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince William (now the Duke of Cambridge) tied the knot last Friday, April 29, 2011.

In all honesty, the fashion-savvy were far more intrigued with what Kate Middleton was wearing more so than the wedding festivities!

The morning of the wedding, Style.com posted this article: “Kate Middleton Wears Alexander McQueen,” thus answering the query of many among the nation and around the world. Soon after, articles popped up on the Internet in regards to the second gown Middleton donned for the post-wedding dinner reception at Buckingham Palace.

The creative director of Alexander McQueen, Sarah Burton, designed both the wedding and post-wedding reception gowns for Middleton.

The second gown, worn at the evening reception, was a party-appropriate yet simply elegant white satin gazar and strapless, with silver diamante embroidery at the waist. It featured a circle skirt and Middletown paired it with a cropped angora sweater.

McQueen gowns retail (on an average) from $7,000 to $15,000. A budget-friendly replica of the second McQueen gown that Middleton sported at the reception would be THEIA’s silk organza ball gown with crystal-beaded waistband (retails for $1,995) – as shown during April bridal market. This particular THEIA gown hits select Nordstrom bridal boutiques in August.

Emerging Houston Boutique: Raquel's Closet

Said to be from California, but raised in Houston, the do-it-all diva Raquel Lee keeps herself busy with her rap/music career, styling photo shoots, hair/makeup, being a personal shopper, as well as a boutique owner.

With only 6 months in the prominent River Oaks location, Raquel's Closet (located at 2611 S. Shepherd - Suite #145, Houston, TX 77098) boasts an unique, fun and friendly vibe. The petite boutique screams a hot pink; girly yet fashionable theme. The boutique features clothes/merchandise from a variety of independent designers - most of whom are from Los Angeles. The assortment of merchandise isn't too diverse, however the array of choices can fit anyone from a petite individual to a plus-size one. Also, don't be fooled by the size-labels on the merchandise, because a size "S" (small) can fit an extra small to small, so don't hesitate to try on clothes/merchandise because you're afraid it won't fit you. Lee is wise in knowing what clothes work on any body - regardless of size - so the small arrangement of merchandise can quickly sell out; pair that with the low prices (almost everything is under $50) and it's sure to be a seller!

Although I wouldn't quite say everything is a classic piece as most of the merchandise is in-season or trendy attire with classical to whimsical charm. Some of the merchandise may not be everyone's cup of tea (much too "urban" or street-wear, for myself) however it's definitely worth checking out at least once - you're sure to find at least one must-have and/or of-the-moment find!

I know I definitely did... Purchased a black lace skirt (reminiscent of Prada's RTW Fall 2008 collection) for $32.46, with tax!

Also, mind you - since it's a new and emerging boutique - it's very petite and there are a few renovations that I believe could be needed or done! However, I believe the small space has been crafted into an overall enjoyable experience.

YSL: Moroccan Passion

Janelle Monae's song "Mushroom & Roses" is featured in the new Yves Saint Laurent Spring/Summer 2011 advertising campaign video.

The video, filmed by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin features the beautiful "of the moment" model Arizona Muse in the gardens of Bled Roknine, a 30's style villa in Marrakech.

Arizona Muse is one of the top new faces of the year (along with Fashionista.com's "most buzzed about models of the year") and this is her first major advertising campaign - a huge deal since it's YSL!

Yves Saint Laurent's connection to Morocco is well known: the late designer bought the Majorelle botanical gardens and adjoining villa in Marrakech, with his partner Pierre Bergé, in 1980. The gardens served as a source of inspiration to Yves Saint Laurent, and his ashes were scattered there when he died in 2008.

According to Women's Wear Daily (WWD) - The campaign will run concurrently with an exhibition of Saint Laurent’s Moroccan-inspired designs at the Jardin Majorelle, due to end mid-March. Bergé last month published “Yves Saint Laurent, une passion marocaine,” an illustrated book detailing his life with Yves Saint Laurent in Morocco.

Jan. 2011 Glamour vs. Mar. 2011 Vogue India

(American actress) Reese Witherspoon wore this Burberry Prorsum Spring 2011 Ready-To-Wear pink ruffled dress with leather details on the cover of the January 2011 issue of (USA) Glamour Magazine.

The same dress is worn by (Indian model/actress) Deepika Padukone on the cover of the March 2011 issue of Vogue India, obviously since there's a "Vogue India exclusive" on Burberry fashion designer and chief creative director Christopher Bailey.

In the end I'd say it's a result of Condé Nast Publications, who owns both magazines!

Which cover is better, in your opinion/view?

I, personally, admire the Vogue India March 2011 cover... the aesthetics, colors and graphics of the cover are far superior to that of Glamour. Of course, Deepika Padukone is a professional model prior to her role as a Bollywood actress, so I'm sure her pose or "strategic alignment of her body" also plays a huge element in the cover being far more aesthetically appealing!

MOCK Magazine is set to launch in May of this year. The above image is their unfinished cover page as well as their trademarked logo [the mockingbird]. The concept or inspiration behind the magazine title is the way our society or more so individuals mock fashion, mock beauty, mock other people and even mock culture. MOCK Magazine's definition of "mock" is not to ridicule or judge, but rather to mimic, imitate; to challenge and to defy the norms or perceptions of society. Their demographic or target audience would be fashion/art orientated, creative individuals that challenge/defy the norms by thinking and/or creating "out of the box".

MOCK Magazine will be clean [as in layouts], professional, edgy or "out of the box", and the magazine will be more like an European-fashion magazine [think Purple Magazine or Vogue Paris].

Ashish Gupta x Topshop Collaboration

The latest Ashish Gupta x Topshop collaboration features a sportswear range adorned in punk-inspired studs, as seen on Rihanna. The collection looks a bit similar to or influenced by Ashish's Spring/Summer 2010 collection.

The new 7-piece collection features 5 pieces in jersey fabric. The 4 pieces which include a rolled-up grey marl tracksuit trouser, a pair of matching cuffed shorts, a cropped charcoal sweatshirt (tied at the waist), a pair of studded tracksuit bottoms and a studded black sweatshirt all lend themselves to the sporty-chic aesthetic seen on the London Fashion Week Spring runway.

The other two pieces include a biker jacket featuring Ashish’s trademark 3-centimeter studs and a pair of 1970s-inspired gold platform wedges.

Of the collection, Ashish says: “Studs and spikes were a big part of my mainline collection this season, and it felt right to carry that through in some way for my range for Topshop. I love the contrast between soft sweatshirt fabric and metal spikes — it's classic sportswear meets punk.”

I personally think the studded cotton sweatpants is a bit too much, in fact some of the pieces from the collaboration are a bit too far-fetched for me. Above, I've compiled a few of the pieces from the Ashish Gupta x Topshop collaboration that I truly adore.

Monsoon / Accessorize: The Magic Is You

Monsoon Stores, an United Kingdom design-led retailer operating two highly successful chains known as Monsoon and Accessorize, has developed a strong brand with a highly distinctive identity that is quickly becoming well-known throughout the fashion industry.

Founded in 1973 by Peter Simon, the original focus was always clothes with an ethnic origin from various countries, ranging from unusual dresses from Afghanistan to hand block printed clothes from Rajasthan. The intrinsic beauty of fabric, color and technique so evident in the early sourcing of Monsoon's products from the Far East continues to exercise a strong influence to this day.

In May 1973, the first Monsoon shop opened in Beauchamp Place, Knightsbridge, London. In 1984, Accessorize evolved as Monsoon started to sell a small collection of accessories which became so popular that the idea for the innovative new store format was born thus creating an exciting and strongly differentiated High Street concept for fashion accessories in an adjoining shop to the Monsoon, Covent Garden Piazza branch. The second Accessorize store was soon after set in Carnaby Street in 1986. 1992 saw the first Accessorize store outside London with a store opening in Manchester. In the same year the first airport store was opened at London - Gatwick South terminal. Building on the company's phenomenal success, a store opening program began, averaging 16 new stores each year.

In May 1999, Monsoon Home launched its first shop in Kings Road, London. The range incorporates the Monsoon look and philosophy creating an innovative and individual home accessories range. Then in 2001, Monsoon Baby was launched, as well as Accessorize Angels. In 2003, Monsoon Boy was launched with Monsoon Men following in the Autumn of 2004.

Monsoon has expanded rapidly from its London base. Today there are over 400 Monsoon and Accessorize stores in the United Kingdom and over 600 throughout the world (unfortunately none in the United States, as of yet). However, for those who can't seem to find a Monsoon / Accessorize store nearby in their state or country, there is international delivery for online shoppers - which does include the United States (5-12 days delivery time).

I only recently heard about Monsoon and Accessorize when I was browsing through merchandise for looks on Looklet. I came upon this gorgeous scarf covered with peonies (my favorite flower) from Monsoon, which made me want to investigate more on the company/brand.

*Here's a look I created using only products from Monsoon and Accessorize.

Products used from Accessorize: Vintage Enveloped Clutch Bag, Enchanted Vine Wrap Gem Ring, Jaguar Buckle Faux-Snake Skinny Belt, and these black sandals (which I, unfortunately, can not find on their online store).

Products used from Monsoon: the beloved peony-scarf (which I, to my own dismay, can not find on their online store), this luscious violet skirt and this black dress with amazing details on the front (both of which I, also, can not find on their online store).

There's all sorts of goodies for all types of individuals, regardless of your personal style, so I definitely urge everyone to check out Monsoon and/or Accessorize.

One of my favorites from the new collection would definitely be the t-shirt in memory of Yves Saint Laurent:

Writers Wanted: Men's Online Magazine

The Rugged - Men Live It; Women Love It, a new men's online lifestyle magazine like no other featuring articles on fitness, finance, relationships, sports, fashion/style, tech toys and everything else men love, launches January 2010!

Their target audience is men ages 18-34;
they plan to eventually start competing with larger sites such as Ask Men, Made Man, Spike, FHM, and others in the men's lifestyle niche.

The Rugged is currently looking for writers as well as potential partners/editors in the near future.

*Requirements:

Excellent English writing skills (grammar, spelling, sentence structure)
Be able to format an article for the best possible readability. Know when (and when not) to use bullets, sub-headers, etc.
Be capable of extensively researching a subject and portraying authority
Engaging writing style (this might include witty, humorous, personal, ability to connect with readers)
Be able to produce content that generates buzz and is worthy of being linked to.

A perfect example of what The Rugged is looking for is the publication Men's Health. With that said, they're looking for writers to take on a variety of topics including:

1.) Health & Fitness

2.) Money & Power

3.) Relationships & Sex - looking for articles that are a bit more sophisticated than what you might find in say, FHM. This can be a bit tricky, but if you've ever read Men's Health and FHM you can see the difference in the target audience. FHM targets teenage boys. Men's Health targets men starting careers. The Rugged's target audience is more on par with Men's Health.
{I've read Men's Health Magazine, as they have great articles and wonderful advertising - FHM is 90% filth in my view, although I did enjoy their post on Women's 1960s Vintage Fashion!}

4.) Sports – looking for broad topics here. A bad example would be a complete run down of a baseball game. A good example might be something about the Brett Favre controversy or a hyped up UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) fight. Anything that interests the mainstream and not necessarily specific sports gurus.

5.) Fashion / Style – clothes, hygiene, etc.

6.) Technology – concept cars, smart phones, gadgets, toys, video games, the web, etc. Looking for broad articles covering the juicy stuff, not technical pieces.

7.) Controversial Rants – The Rugged plans to have a section that is purely controversial. The writer's job will be to generate debates among readers - in an educated, witty, humorous, open-minded manner. The Rugged stresses “open-minds” as well as intends on having political debates. If you find it hard to agree with views from more than one news station, then you’re probably not what they're looking for in this particular section.

*Pay:
The Rugged is looking for writers who are interested in developing a long-term relationship. They want great writers and want their writers to stick around. They feel that their pay structure reflects that - base pay, bonus pay, and revenue-sharing. [Pay is negotiable - depending on skills, article quality, and the ability to generate buzz + readership.]

Base Pay: $3 per 100 words. The Rugged plans to gradually increase this figure, upwards of $10 per 100 words as the magazine grows. Articles will typically stay at around 400-600 words. Although there will also be the occasional 200 word news articles and even 1,000 word pillar articles.
Bonus: If your articles are hitting the front page of social media sites, it won’t go unnoticed. You’ll be awarded bonus pay for such achievements - upwards of $100 depending on the success of the article.
Revenue-Sharing: The Rugged wants their success to be your success. Therefore, writers will share a percentage of monthly revenue.
Additional Opportunities: As the magazine grows, one of The Rugged's first priorities will be to increase the pay and opportunities for their writers. As mentioned, they'll also be looking for senior editors and even community managers in the future.

Lawndale Art Center Exhibition Opening

Lawndale Art Center is a non-profit alternative space for the exhibition of contemporary works in all media, unique in its focus on Houston area artists. Housed in an Art Deco building in Midtown, Lawndale has 4 galleries and annually hosts 20 exhibitions, informal talks and special events.

Opening reception tonight, December 2, 2009 from 6–8pm in Room #317 for: Hypnopomp | Britt Ragsdale, University of Houston Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts Studio Residency. Exhibition is on view from December 2–19, 2009.

Lawndale Art Center and the University of Houston Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts present Hypnopomp, a installation by Mitchell Center alumna Britt Ragsdale. Through sculptural objects and audio components, Britt Ragsdale explores the combination of hypnopomp and sleep paralysis. Hypnopomp is the scientific term referring to the cognitive state leading out of sleep. It is considered much more emotional and credulous in comparison to the experience of dreaming in hypnagogia, or the cognitive state of entering sleep.

Commonly combined with sleep paralysis, when the brain suddenly awakens from sleep while the muscles are still paralyzed by REM atonia, hynopompic hallucinations merge with normal vision to create an experience that many people have equated to supernatural encounters.

Along with Britt Ragsdale's art work there will be a performance at 7pm in the O'Quinn Gallery by Chin Xaou Ti Won, a Houston-based synth-pop / contemporary classical duo, comprised of Marcus Cone and St-Michel. The music draws heavily from 80's New Wave, Anime-Pop / Video Game Music and 20th Century Minimalism - all belted out on a stack of synths, electronics and walls of percussion. Often dubbed by critics as "film music", Chin Xaou Ti Won's music is built strongly around melodies, ranging from the simplistic, yet catchy, to the lush and contemplative.

So I finally gave into the Gaga craze yesterday.

First off, I dare you to watch the official music video to Lady Gaga's single "Bad Romance" (if you haven't already):

"I want your horror, I want your design, 'Cause you're a criminal - as long as you're mine..."

/// Featured in the music video: Ukrainian Vodka (Nemiroff LEX), Alexander McQueen Printemps-Été 2010 and (similar to Nagi Noda's hair hats) Japanese hairstylist Shinji Konishi's bat hair hat.

The whole music video looks like a high-fashion magazine editorial spread, like something out of Vogue Italia! The whole concept of the music video and contrasting colors throughout is just orgasmic! (And the tune/visuals at the end of the video reminded me somehow of something from The Munsters)
Also, the sexy men (male models, most likely) in the music video remind me of the 2007 action, yet very fashionable, film Hitman (directed by French director Xavier Gens). You have to watch it if you haven't already; it's one of my favorite films!
The whole music video just feeds my fashionable fantasies! I won't even start. All I have to say is high-fashion is better than porn!
Anyways, throughout the video, I've realized Gaga looks like a love child of Madonna and Gwen Stefani. However, she seems to mimic not only their look/style - she even appears to remind me of (former club kid) James St. James, (fashion designer) Betsey Johnson, and (almost everyone should know) Gaga imitates Róisín Murphy!
I like Gaga's music, effort, concepts/ideas and she is talented - yet I'm still not a huge fan of hers.
I actually prefer Róisín Murphy, considering the first time I heard about her was when I saw her amazing performance at Fashion Rocks on Fashion TV. However I do have to thank the lovely Gabriel Geismar (for those who don't know him, he's the exquisite Janice Dickinson's makeup artist and a very kindred soul - mostly I adore talking fashion/life with him when he gets the time) for sending me Lady Gaga's "Just Dance" music video my way, which is actually the first time I had heard about Gaga.
I just feel like Gaga tries too hard or something and she's far too "commercial" - there's just something about Gaga that doesn't appeal to me. Maybe its all the hype?

Either way, I prefer beauty-&-brains types [who speak to /resonate with my soul], like (artist/heiress) Daphne Guinness! Maybe I prefer mademoiselle Guinness because she's proved herself as more than just a fashion/beauty icon - she's also a journalist, fashion stylist, film producer and a collector of haute couture.
Whatever. As time/life changes, maybe I'll find myself liking Gaga more... after all, as our life experiences change/shape us we realize what we once liked or disliked we may feel differently about in the years to come. I know its very true for myself! (And it never really struck me as hard until this one time when a beloved-&-wise fashion professor at my college named monsieur Alexander Chapman said something that just hit me like a thunderbolt).

I've just now learned that Lady Gaga is Nicola Formichetti's client and he styled the entire music video, which was directed by Francis Lawrence.
For those who don't quite know me well - I'm a huge fan of Formichetti; he is my absolute favorite stylist! I would probably give up my life just to work, or even intern, for him! I've been in love with his work as well as following his styling for quite some time now - everything he creates is just pure genius! He manipulates what I call "average mojo-jojo" people would even think to pair together!
Also, I was just now watching the Lady Gaga June 2009 Interview on Formichetti's blog and I must admit I did just dislike her for her "commercial/mass-media hype". She is very wise, in actuality! She dropped out of NYU to live a starving artist life - that's passion; that's the kind of beautiful torture that makes me love individuals!

One more thing - Nicola Formichetti has posted the entire fashion credits for Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" music video on his blog! It's perfect because Formichetti has answered my prayers/questions! Thank God/the-universe for brilliant minds and passionate hearts!

Lady Gaga wears a Jaiden rVa James mask in a shoot shot by fashion photographer Max Abadian, for December 2009's issue of Flare Magazine. Obviously styled by the great Nicola Formichetti!

- The crystal rosaries created by (fashion designer) Benjamin Cho, as featured previously in Paper Magazine.

My favorite Benjamin Cho piece is this polar bear faux-fur coat, which was created for his Spring 2004 runway show with the Humane Society. I guess I should be happy it's not real fur, but I do adore real fur as well. Anyways, this faux-fur polar bear coat is something I would wear to my (fashionable fantasy) wedding. It's supremely lovely!

- The lovely lace, red outfit created by (fashion/graphic designer and Australian artist) Alex Noble. Alex Noble is a huge inspiration to me because he gives me hope that I don't have to settle into any one aspect of the fashion/art/business industry but I can indeed do whatever I feel I can achieve or am passionate about! His work/life resonates deep within my soul. To me, I believe in all or nothing and always following your heart!
Lady Gaga has an amazing and brilliantly talented team behind her. I can only hope I learn as much as I can from lovely, kindred souls so that one day I too may lead a passionate, liberating life within the fashion industry! xo.

Anna Wintour (editor-in-chief of American Vogue) appears tonight on the Late Show with David Letterman on CBS to promote the upcoming documentary "The September Issue", which chronicles Wintour’s preparations for the massive September 2007 issue of Vogue (featuring Sienna Miller on the cover).

The September 2007 issue is said to be Vogue's biggest issue ever and the documentary is a behind-the-scenes look into Vogue as it follows the fashion legend and her team of editors while they brainstorm, style shoots, and meet with designers for the magazine issue. It will be Wintour's first appearance on the late show, but her second time using mainstream media (CBS) to promote Vogue as well as the fashion industry in general.

The Rachel Zoe Project - Season 2 premieres tonight 10pm/9pm central-time on Bravo. Follow celebrity stylist, Rachel Zoe, and her style associates/assistants (Brad Goreski & Taylor Jacobson) as they juggle deadlines, fashion shows, and celebrity clients.

Also, it was reported on Bravotv.com that designers like Giorgio Armani, John Galliano, Christian Lacroix, Karl Lagerfeld, Giambattista Valli, Diane Von Furstenberg and Matthew Williamson would make guest appearances.

Sex & The City - The (Movie) Sequel

but friendships never go out of style."

According to Australia's Channel 10 and NBC's Today Show, there will be a sequel to the Sex & the City movie!

According to Aussie's 10, Kim Cattrall (who plays Samantha in the series) let slip that there will definitely be a second film during an interview on a British talk show.

And today morning, there were casting calls held at Metropolitan Pavilion in Manhattan's Chelsea district for extras to star in the sequel (SAG & non-SAG, to play: fashion models, celebrity types, upscale socialites, urban club goers, gays & lesbians, international types (Middle-Eastern/Arabic, Asian, European/British), professional soccer players, etc.)

The first movie for the series was delayed for years, reportedly over money disputes between Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall - which the pair have since compromised and come to terms with.

The second movie is set to hit theaters summer 2010 (say May 28th), according to Celeb TV's Kelli Zink and Why Fame. And (as told to reporters by writer/director Michael Patrick King) the sequel is said to be different from the first film, which was more of an epic love story full of disasters, (Vogue) surprises and drama. But, one thing is for sure - there will be plenty of eye candy for fashion lovers thanks to (NYC fashion stylist and designer) Patricia Field!

Additionally, Candace Bushnell (the American author and NYC columnist, best known for writing a sex column that was turned into the Sex & the City book which became the basis of the television series) announced that she's writing a "prequel" to the ladies' lives, taking them maybe from teen through college years to the time they all met.

If you're an avid Sex & the City fan, like myself, I suggest following Cosmo Guy and Sex & the City 2 Movie to keep up to date. Don't forget to mark your calendars!

Burton + Depp + Vamps = Love

Apparently, Burton and Depp are teaming up for the big-screen adaptation of "Dark Shadows," the Gothic soap opera about vampires, ghosts, and monsters that ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971.

Before Lestat, Angel, and Edward Cullen, there was Barnabas Collins, a 175 year old vampire who stalked the town of Collinsport, Maine pining for his lost love.

Originally, the character of Barnabas, played by Shakespearean actor Jonathan Frid, was only intended for a 13-week story arc on "Dark Shadows", but he caused such a sensation with viewers that he became the lead character for the next 4 years.

Depp is said to play Barnabas, a life long dream role for him according to Collider.

Barnabas is the first vampire to stray from the truly evil incarnation that Bram Stoker epitomized with “Dracula.” Depp wants to bring the story of Barnabas to the big screen in a new, sexy, charming aura/style and I'm super excited about this film!

Edgy Chef: Sam Mason

Obsession: Sam Mason, Chef.

(Above) Sam invites touring bands to his Manhattan loft in his online show called "Dinner with the Band" on One Networks. They prepare dinner and discuss music. In this video, Chef Sam prepares migas for Canadian indie band Tokyo Police Club.

So a few days ago I ended up watching Gourmet Magazine's show "Diary Of A Foodie" on PBS. I didn't really know what I was watching until the show was over. Basically it was about desserts and I'm a dessert junkie so obviously I was down for it. Also, Barcelona was mentioned in the show and I want to live in Spain one day ("the ultimate") so I was defintiely going to be watching this episode.

So I can't embed the video of the full episode I watched but you can find it online on their website, under Episode 8: #108 - "Just Desserts".

First part of the episode "Just Desserts" highlights Sam Mason, New York City pastry chef. He is walking sex, a rare breed, total inspiration... and I think I found my dream chef! I can't possibly be happy with just one guy (obviously - unless he is an all-in-one type and/or I get over my commitment-phobia)... so I've always thought if I found my type of guy who is a chef, I can finally get to a "healthy" weight (preferably 100 lbs) and think of how wonderful it would be to have him cook me anything I desire (especially considering how I'm super picky). But, one thing I keep wondering (aside from his looks and cooking ability) is - how does he cook with all those accessories on?

"I don't know if I think outside the box. That's what people say, but I feel like I'm just in my box. I think inside my box, but my box is somewhere else." - Sam Mason.

After monsieur Mason's segment comes Barcelona's legendary all-dessert restaurant, Espai Sucre. Main courses and all are solely devoted to desserts ("heaven"). Then, off to Peru for Helena's Chocolates & Tejas.

Later in the show they show the editor-in-chief of Gourmet magazine as well as a photographer and food stylist for the magazine. I didn't really realize there was a career as a "food" stylist. But, then I thought about it in fashion industry terms and I'm sure most people don't realize the importance of a fashion stylist. So I guess every industry/field has their own realm of stylists.

The Combination /// The Controversy

So I just saw this amazing and powerful Aussie film - "The Combination." It's uber controversial... and I love a bloody, good controversy (anything/anyone that challenges the status quo)!

The film revolves around a contemporary Lebanese family in urban Australia - more specifically Sydney's western suburbs of Parramatta and Guildford.

Plot: John Morkos (George Basha) is released from prison intent on a new life, free of his old ways. But he finds his younger brother Charlie (Firass Dirani) being lured by the local underworld. His demands to stay clear of crime fall on deaf ears as Charlie has no respect for his older brother. In the thrall of gang leader Zeus (Ali Haidar), Charlie's life oscillates between the school yard punch-ups and the gang-land streets of his neighborhood.

When John meets Sydney (Clare Bowen), a beautiful Anglo-Aussie girl, and finds a job at the neighborhood boxing gym his life is challenged and changed in unexpected ways. But Charlie's continuing descent into the world of crime places his whole family in harms way forcing John to risk his new life to right his younger brother's wrong.

In regards to the storyline, it's very "American History X." The acting and some of the visuals aren't so superb, as most of the young actors in the film were literally talent-spotted off the streets of western Sydney (where much of the film was shot). However the message as well as the history of the film is well worth the watch!

The script for the film was written by George Basha, who plays the main character John in the film. He's a Lebanese-Australian who grew up in Guildford and who, between stints as a tradesman, has had minor acting roles in other Australian films including the 1997 film "Black Rock" (internationally, best remembered as the debut film for Australian actor Heath Ledger.)

The film's subject matter is raw and real, particularly the racial tension between the Lebanese + Asian school boys and their Anglo-Aussie counterparts.

Perhaps to emphasize the point, albeit fleetingly, TV footage of the Cronulla riots of 2005 were incorporated in the film.

The love interest between Basha's character, John, and Anglo-Australian girl Sydney (Clare Bowen) with her disapproving parents reinforces evidence of the racial divide in Australia. One of the film's classy performances comes from Doris Younane, who plays John and Charlie's mother Mary with at times heart-wrenching sensitivity.

The essence of the film is encapsulated in Basha's own words: ''A world away, streets apart.''

Honestly, I didn't realize Aussies were so racist to Middle-Easterners and I really didn't know about this situation in Australia until I watched the film. It really enlightened me on the subject!

The Lebanese-Australians in the film, as well as in much of Australia, are treated much like how African-Americans are treated in America. It's very violent, vulgar and primitive!
(Although I do realize this isn't really a new subject since ever since 9/11 Middle-Easterners and anyone who looks "Middle-Eastern" have been targets of racial tensions, hate and crime.)

There were parts of the film which I could relate to in many ways.
I think everyone can relate to the film in the sense that everyone wants to "belong" / wants to "fit in" but you can't no matter what you do!

I am (according to society and norms) South-Asian and American... so when you are from two different cultures you realize how much you never really fit in. When I go to South-Asian places I'm considered too "American" and when I'm in America people ask me "What's your race?" The same dilemma many Lebanese-Australians face. Also, the Leb-Aussie family in the film were Christian and yet they were still treated as foreigners simply because ignorant individuals think all Lebanese / Middle-Easterners are Muslim. A problem which knowledge and an open-mind can easily solve! It's a problem I'm familiar with, as well, because I grew up as a Roman Catholic and most people think I'm Hindu and/or Muslim because I'm from India.

To me, the core of the film really was that -

We are not our parents!
We have the choice to think,
& choose for ourselves!
Stop living in the past,
& begin the future!
Stop the hate,
& start the love!
We're all human beings!

I'm an avid believer in humanity! I don't believe in religion, sexuality and nationalities/races!
In fact, many people who really know me probably already know that... If you meet me then ask me "What race/nationality are you?," I'll answer with "Why? Does it matter?" or I've had people ask me straight-forwardly "What are you?" and I reply with "I'm human."

A lot of people think I don't like my nationality/race/culture but that's not the case really. Sure, I don't know much about it and there are several dramatic individuals who make me wish I was a different nationality/race/culture but I never said I didn't like what/whom I am! In fact, I love myself but at the same time I hate myself. I'm that way with everyone - I love you and I hate you - regardless of everything. I think I'm a rare breed. I haven't met many people like myself. There's only a few and they're scattered all throughout the world. I say we unite as one and create a revolution!

On a lighter note, Firass Dirani (left from above picture, in the camo) may be super cute in the film but Ali Haider (right from above picture, in the stripes) is the definition of sex! Well, he's my definition of sex - which really is defined as unconventional, ballsy, edgy and "he'll fuck you up if you fuck with him". But, that's only one definition of my kind of sexy since I do adore dark rebels, lovely romantics, gorey goths, gender-benders and mostly "outcasts". Anyone who doesn't "fit in" anywhere and isn't anything like my parents / "society" - that's for sure!

Also, I love the haircuts of the Leb-Aussie boys in the film - super sexy!

And I had to share this as well... my favorite quote from the film was when the Leb-Aussie guy says to the racist Anglo-Aussie guy: "At least we came in planes; you came in chains." (I adore satire!)

Alright, to end this post - I hope this film gets the wonderful recognition it deserves... in Australia and worldwide! It's a definite must-see, especially if you love controversy (like myself)!

It's so controversial in Australia that there have been several security increases needed when this film was screened and there were even bans to play the film in theaters because of violence/riots that have occurred after the showing.

However, great films are meant to provoke and challenge! I believe films are an art form and they should be created to help people think in a larger sense, not just escape their normal day-to-day routine (much like mainstream Hollywood and Bollywood does). Entertainment is fine once in a while, but really you need to challenge your way of thinking! After all, some of the best inventive moments were born out of "wrong thinking". Most people start with the right way so they all follow the same path. The wrong way will lead to mistakes from which you can learn and create new discoveries – the kind of original ideas that come to life when we dare to be different, keep an open mind and have no fear of failure. x.

David Sedaris' new book is a must-read!

For those who do not know who he is: David Sedaris is a Grammy Award nominated American humorist, writer, comedian, bestselling author, and radio contributor.

I love Sedaris' humor, mind and soul!

His latest book, "When You Are Engulfed in Flames," is a collection of essays on trying to make coffee when the water is shut off, being picked up by a driver that wants a blow job, buying drugs in a mobile home in rural North Carolina, having a lozenge fall from your mouth into the lap of a fellow passenger on a plane, fascination with dead bodies, language barriers and their consequences, armoring windows with LP covers to protect the house from neurotic songbirds, and venturing to Japan in order to quit smoking - among others.

The cover is major love - it's an early painting by Vincent Van Gogh called "Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette." The title of the book is named after a chapter in a booklet Sedaris found in a hotel room in Hiroshima.

I'm doing a photo shoot on Thursday, May 7th at Brett Chisholm's studio. It's my Fashion Image final/styling project and I've chosen to do a "dark-&-dreamy" theme (since I am hardcore for dark romance and that is my view of "the ultimate"). It just speaks volumes to my soul - always has and always will. I'm doing menswear as that is my love/passion. I've decided I ultimately want to work in menswear after all and I'd like to be a stylist for high-fashion editorials, preferably for menswear.

So my first-&-ultimate choice (Plan A, if you will) male model bailed on me a few hours ago and now I have to act quick on my Plan B. I'm super bummed because Plan A was skinny, pale, gloomy yet lovely and embodied as well as exuded my theme/look/vision naturally. But, I have no time for failure and I can't sulk in misery forever.

Makeup and props are complete, although wardrobe is still in the works. I'm currently looking for a top hat for my Plan B male model because I just feel like without a top hat and a lot of black, Plan B male model may not work.

I'm on the hunt for a top hat in Houston. I contacted Miller Hats Houston Retail Showroom today but they won't have any of that particular inventory in stock until Monday morning.

So I started to check out formal wear stores that may carry top hats in Houston and ended up checking out the website for Al's Formal Wear. Then, I clicked the "build a tux" button and I realized I had found my ideal/look!

Homelessness + Humanness

Today I saw this amazing short film on PBS' "The Territory." The program, co-produced by Southwest Alternate Media Project, Austin Museum of Art and Houston - PBS in cooperation with the Museum of Fine Arts - Houston, is the longest running showcase of independent film on public television in the country.

I always end up accidentally watching it. Honestly, I don't have cable and television is plagued with reality shows, which I truly don't care for (except in the case of "The Amazing Race" because I love travel shows). So I usually end up watching PBS because it's the only channel that always has something insightful.

Anyways, so this short film is called "When The Light's Red." It's based/shot in Austin, Texas and it's essentially one man's take/perspective on intersection panhandling. It's a humorous, entertaining and touching short film, as well as an examination of privilege, power, reality and the way in which these forces intersect inside our heads and outside our car window.

Pretty much the short film was major soul-speaking to me because I feel for homeless people and I especially adore the beautiful homeless individuals who just need a major makeover and life-change.

Of course I never felt this way in the past about homeless individuals. But, it all changed on July 31, 2008 when I had stopped at a red light off the 59-South feeder and FM1092/Murphy Rd. That day I saw the most beautiful homeless man I've ever seen in my life [[no joke]]!

Usually unless I'm in downtown and the homeless individuals aren't looking at me (as I don't like to make eye contact), I like to look at them - see the clothes they wear, how they look, try to grasp their sense of style. They inspire me. I have a strange fascination with the beautiful ones or the ones that have that certain beauty to them. I'm a slave to beauty!

But, when they start trying to clean my windshield I don't like it since they usually do it in hopes of getting money and I never give them money. I don't like to give homeless people money because you never know what they will do with money (buy some booze/alcohol and drugs/narcotics, that's the first thing that I think of). I'd feel much safer+better giving them food or something that I believe would improve themselves along with their existence.

Anyways, this beautiful homeless guy had a beard and dirty clothes. I thought it was the ugly homeless guy I had seen before, but it wasn't. I didn't realize that until after he finished wiping/cleaning my windshield. He looked at me for money. I made eye contact, obviously because they are human beings too. I shook my head when he looked at me for money. Then, at that very moment, I actually noticed his face... and his face was beautiful. Honestly, he was too beautiful to be homeless! I immediately had the thought: "He should be a model, not a homeless bum on the streets!"

He had piercing, beautiful blue eyes. He had the look and I knew it! He looked like Success Model Management's Patrick Petitjean. [[I kid you not!]] And I adore monsieur Petitjean because I adore men that look as lovely as Jesus Christ himself (speaking of which, Patrick Petitjean was Jesus Christ w/ thorns on his head in a 2007 Arena Homme+ editorial shoot). I've been swooning over him ever since I first saw him in the F/W 2007 GQ Style "Altered State" editorial, photographed by Nathaniel Goldberg. Plus, now that Petitjean is on the "model must-have" platter, he's very selective about his photoshoots and doesn't do certain photoshoots unless they transcend a strong message which he wishes to embody [[very soul-worthy]].

By the time I had my epiphany, it was too late. The beautiful homeless man had walked way past my car to ask other drivers for money. I wish I had given him something. Now all I have is the thought of him. Ever since I met him, I've definitely changed my mind-set toward homeless individuals.

Anyways, if you want to watch the short film I'm talking about or want to view it again on Houston - PBS, it will be broadcasting (Sunday) April 19th at 12:30am. It's the first short film of the program and it's approximately 11 minutes long.

The Decision Of Your Lifetime

I just finished watching this film called
"Me And You And Everybody We Know,"
written and directed by Miranda July.

It's a poetic and penetrating cinematic observation of how people struggle to connect with one another in an isolating and contemporary world.

In many ways, it is the story of everybody really. We all want something and/or someone, but when something/someone happens to us - it scares us and throws us off, often times leading us to do the opposite of what we really want.

¿ What a perfect time to learn+grow ?

Get over the fear.
Acknowledge it, face it, brave it and grow from it!

Plus, for this year's U.K. Mental Health Foundation's "action week" they're launching a national campaign to raise awareness about the impact fear and anxiety can have on our lives.

On a lighter note, how cute is her striped top? Major!

Desert Flower

Liya Kebede, the Ethiopian-born supermodel, will soon begin work on her third film, an independent-film directed by German-American Sherry Hormann entitled "Desert Flower," a $16 million adaptation of Somalian supermodel, Waris Dirie's autobiography of the same name. Kebede previously had film roles in "The Good Shepherd" and "Lord of War."

Liya Kebede plays the lead role, starring as Waris Dirie in the film - set to launch in September 2009 in Germany. It chronicles Dirie's rise from a childhood in the Somali desert to the catwalks of the international fashion community and her role as a United Nations spokeswoman against female genital mutilation/circumsion - elements of which Kebede can relate to as a World Health Organization Goodwill Ambassador and founder of The Liya Kebede Foundation.

Hundreds of young women were invited to casting calls in London, Paris, Kenya, South Africa, Los Angeles and New York before they decided on the Ethiopian supermodel to play Dirie as an adult.

Also, British Golden Globe award-winning actress Sally Hawkins (best known for her performance as Poppy in "Happy-Go-Lucky") is said to star in the film as well.

I want to be simple; minimal (mind, body and soul) - without losing my essence. I am too much, I want too much and I love excess so much that I want to live+die in excess. Although I do realize I get happy over the simplest, littlest things and nobody can buy my love+happiness!

Going Kabbalah

So I'm starting to get into Kabbalah.
There's a Kabbalah center in Houston and I'm planning to attend a Kabbalah seminar next Monday.
I'm trying to learn more about it. I really like the doctrines!
I don't like "religion," but I do believe in God as I've found God and I do uphold my own beliefs.
Truth is that Kabbalah was never meant for a specific sect. Rather, it was intended to be used by all humanity to unify the world.

Kabbalah teaches that in order for us to claim the gifts we were created to receive, we must first earn those gifts. We earn them by undertaking our spiritual work — the process of fundamentally transforming ourselves. By helping us recognize the sources of negativity in our own minds and hearts, Kabbalah gives us the tools for positive change.

Kabbalah teaches that every human being is a work in progress. Any pain, disappointment, or chaos that exists in our lives is not because this is how life is meant to be, but only because we have not yet finished the work that brought us here. That work, quite simply, is the process of freeing ourselves from the domination of the human ego and creating an affinity with the sharing essence of God.
In everyday life, this transformation means letting go of anger, jealousy, and other reactive behaviors in favor of patience, empathy, and compassion. It does not mean giving up all desire and going to live on a mountaintop. On the contrary, it means desiring more of the fulfillment that humanity was meant to have.

And I'm very iffy about the Red String, a strand of red wool worn around the left wrist to ward off the destructive forces of the Evil Eye. Its purpose is to protect us from the envious looks of others, and to help us eliminate feelings of jealousy and resentment in ourselves.

I'll see how it goes. I am like a chameleon — always changing.

I detest getting attached to anyone/someone because then you'll have to be there for them and what happens when they aren't there for you?

It doesn't matter because there's only one that's there for me and this one will always be there for me. He's the only reason I am living! He's the only one that's ever truly cared, understood me, has been there for me (even at times when I was not there for him) and truly loves me regardless.

I guess I feel bad because I'm falling into my old habits/patterns.

Every time I take a step ahead, I fall two to three steps back...

Going Commando

I've never gone commando [[have you?]] but I want to. Usually I fantasize about going commando while having a rendezvous in Paris with monsieur Olivier Theyskens (the artistic director of French fashion house Nina Ricci). Although I'm pretty indecisive about these patches, I think going commando is best for summer with a lovely dress or skirt... just make sure to move like you're wearing a skin-tight pencil skirt otherwise it could turn into a Britney Spears or Kelly Osbourne incident.

Asian heartthrob Takeshi Kaneshiro has been chosen as the first male Asian face of Armani.

The Japanese-Taiwanese actor will appear in Emporio Armani underwear’s autumn/winter collection advertising campaign, along with existing endorser David Beckham. Kaneshiro’s fame in Asia is based on films, such as "House of Flying Daggers" and "The Warlords."

Giorgio Armani handled costume design for Kaneshiro’s movie "Confession of Pain."

“I am excited to collaborate with Takeshi on this new advertising campaign. He is a film and style icon in Asia where his fame transcends cultures both East and West. His sense of effortless style is very contemporary and sophisticated and together with his good look makes him the ideal testimonial for Emporio Armani," said Giorgio Armani in a statement.
